Agave Spirits Overview

Agave spirits are derived from the agave plant native to Mexico and other parts of the Americas. Agave has been cultivated for thousands of years and today there are various types of agave spirits enjoyed by consumers worldwide.

Tequila: Tequila is the most well-known agave spirit and is made from the blue agave plant that is primarily grown in the tequila-producing regions of Mexico, like Jalisco. Though tequila is the most widely consumed and recognized agave spirit, others have begun to make a name for themselves as well.

Mezcal: Mezcal encompasses a broader category of agave spirits that includes various types of agave plants. While tequila is limited to strictly blue agave, mezcal can be made from different agave species. While the production methods between mezcal and tequila are similar, mezcal often involves traditional methods like roasting the agave in underground pits, giving the spirit a smoky flavor profile.

Raicilla: Raicilla is another agave spirit that is produced in the Mexican state of Jalisco, primarily the regions surround Puerto Vallarta. It is like mezcal but is typically made from different agave species. The flavor profiles of raicilla can vary greatly, ranging from more fruity and floral expressions to smoky and earthy flavors.

Sotol: Sotol is an agave spirit that is primarily produced in the northern Mexican states like Chihuahua, Coahuila, and Durango. It is made from the Dasylirion wheeleri plant, more commonly known as Desert Spoon or Sotol. Sotol carries a unique flavor profile compared to other agave spirits and is often described as vegetal with notes of citrus.

Agave spirits like tequila, mezcal, raicilla, and sotol, have gained popularity around the world for their distinct flavors and cultural significance. The range of agave spirits available gives any consumer the chance to branch out and experience an incredible variety of expressions of the agave plant.
